We watched some thrilling games in the Legends of Runeterra top 64 Last Chance Qualifier, where players gave their all to secure a spot in the grandest stage of them all, the World Championship!
When going into a highly competitive tournament, players tend to pick the best meta decks out there and create a lineup capable of dealing with the decks they expect to face off against. However, some prefer bringing their off-meta brews, either due to a sense of comfort in piloting them or to introduce an element of surprise.
Off-meta decks can surprise opponents and exploit their lack of practice against them, potentially leading to costly misplays. Misplaying in highly competitive games can be punished heavily and could end up being the reason for a loss.
Let's look at nine off-meta decks that showed up in the top 64 of the Last Chance Qualifier!
Jack Nami Demacia
27 cards
13 cards
GGiR00k brought Jack Nami Demacia to their APAC top 64 run, featuring an intriguing lineup with Akshan Master Yi and Lissandra Taliyah Volibear.
The deck seems to focus on building a board, utilizing Nami and Fleet Admiral Shelly to buff units. This sets up stronger attacks, especially if you manage to buff up Jack. With Coin generation, it sets up the Rally play Nukkle and Bull.
Jack Nami can also set up an elusive win condition with Nukkle, Vikrash the Exuberant, Fleet Admiral Shelly, and Wiggly Burblefish. The buffs on those Elusive units go a long way and will force answers out of the opponent.
The list is also running Judgment and Unyielding Spirit, which would catch opponents off guard during Day 1, but players will be anticipating those powerful cards on Day 2.
Jack Sett
19 cards
21 cards
Pukepito from the EMEA server brought Jack Sett alongside Ashe LeBlanc and Volibear Tryndamere to their top 64 run. While Jack Sett has weaknesses, it can defeat Jax Ornn, Scouts, and Norra Heimerdinger.
This deck heavily relies on champions as win conditions. The Ionia region offers protection tools like Momentous Choice and Tag Out! to keep those champions safe. A leveled Jack will gain Power and threaten to push Overwhelm damage, demanding the opponent deal with him.
As for Sett, the challenger keyword allows you to keep the board in check and remove pesky units. Show Stopper will shift the board presence in your favor, outvaluing your opponent and creating an opportunity to start going for powerful attacks.
Fizz Illaoi
21 cards
19 cards
Sleepping brought an interesting Fizz Illaoi deck to their America top 64 run, alongside Annie Samira and Ahri Zed PZ.
This is a Reaver's Row deck that goes wide on the board and takes advantage of the landmark to create a boar of Fearsome units to strike down the opponent's Nexus.
The deck incorporates unique cards like Siren Song and Shadows of the Past. Siren Song buffs 1-cost units, increasing the pressure you apply on the opponent, while Shadows of the Past can save your board of units and replace them with Living Shadow. This comes in handy mid-combat or in response to removal cards.
Greenglade Duo and Shadow Assassin contribute to an elusive win condition, sneaking Nexus damage.
Illaoi Darius
14 cards
26 cards
ATG l jyori brought this aggressive Illaoi Darius deck to their APAC Last Chance Qualifier run along with Leona Noxus and Riven Gwen. The aggressive combo lineup takes advantage of Enraged Firespitter + Might lethal.
This deck can go wide on the board with Shellshocker and Marai Warden, squeezing early damage before switching to the Overwhelm game plan. Units like Darius and Illaoi create that Overwhelm threat and their Power can be amplified with the Elixir of Wrath.
The alternate win condition is Enraged Firespitter + Might, pushing a lot of Nexus damage to close out the game on the spot.
Heimerdinger Jayce
10 cards
30 cards
Heimerdinger Jayce makes a comeback in the EMEA Last Chance Qualifier! APH nvrwalkalone brought the deck along with Karma Sett PZ and Janna Seraphine Targon.
Heimerdinger Jayce was hit with nerfs to Hextech Handler and Epic Scraptraption, which kicked the archetype out of the meta. However, APH nvrwalkalone brought the deck as a surprise factor, and the fact that it beats popular meta choices like Jax Ornn, Shen Jarvan IV, and Scouts.
This deck relies on 6 cost spells like Formula, Epic Scraptraption, and Shock Blast to advance Jayce's level up and get the double-cast ability online. On the other hand, Heimerdinger offers turret generation, ensuring you keep up with the opponent's board development, and can even shift to an elusive win condition with Mk6: Floor-B-Gone.
Yuumi Bard Kayle
19 cards
21 cards
From the America server, Femboy Friday brought Yuumi Bard Kayle, Jinx Bandle City, and The Poro King FR to Day 2 of LCQ.
Yuumi Bard Kayle is all about buffing units and advancing Bard and Kayle's level-up conditions. The Chimes and Mihira, Aspect of Justice offers those stat buffs, which will put a lot of pressure on the opponent as the game prolongs.
In the late game, it'll be a challenge for the opponent to block and kill the buffed attackers. On top of that, Kayle will gain the Overwhelm and Double Attack keywords if she levels up, setting the stage for the finisher attack.
Additionally, Xolaani the Bloodweaver is an alternative win condition that synergizes with the buffed units and keeps the game plan alive if your elusive units and Kayle are dealt with.
Evelynn Aatrox
40 cards
rayfok from the APAC server brought this Evelynn Aatrox deck along with Volibear Tryndamere and Yuumi The Poro King.
This deck uses Husks to empower the board and set up stronger attacks. Additionally, Domination and Darkin weapons buff the Husks and give a stat boost to newly played units. This also contributes to a stat buff on Xolaani the Bloodweaver.
The deck has two late-game win conditions, Aatrox and Xolaani the Bloodweaver. Aatrox + World Ender can be challenging to shut down, especially when you set up multiple Darkin units along with Aatrox.
Ahri Kennen
38 cards
2 cards
LFR Sokoï showed up in the EMEA top 64 with Ahri Kennen, Vayne Quinn Aatrox, and Gwen Udyr.
Ahri Kennen is one of those decks we don't see at all on the ranked ladder, yet someone in the Runeterra Open will end up bringing it. There are different region splash like Noxus, Shurima, and Bandle City. This version takes advantage of Might to set up a lethal attack.
The plan is to recall units and advance the level-up for both Ahri and Kennen. You'll slowly chip away at the opponent's Nexus with your elusive units before switching to the win condition with a leveled Ahri. An Ahri will be able to strike the Nexus multiple times, so buffing her damage will maximize the Nexus damage she can deal.
Pantheon Varus Yuumi
26 cards
14 cards
The fated Pantheon deck makes an appearance in the Americas Top 64 of the Last Chance Qualifier. AT InMyWhiteRoom's lineup consisted of Pantheon Varus Yuumi, Jax Ornn, and Ashe LeBlanc.
This deck's strategy revolves around leveling Pantheon and Varus as soon as possible and using them as Nexus heavy hitters. A leveled Pantheon will generate random keywords, turning him into a threat that can be difficult for the opponent to shut down.
On the other hand, Varus acts as a secondary win condition, capable of gaining a lot of Power and slamming the opponent's Nexus for a big Overwhelm hit.
Closing Words
The Last Chance Qualifier was filled with thrilling moments as players gave their best to secure a spot on the grandest stage of all. Bringing off-meta decks to a tournament of such high stakes can be daunting, and it requires a lot of confidence in the deck to bring it.
