Hey everyone! Let's spice things up on the ranked ladder by exploring some lesser-known but successful off-meta decks that can provide a breath of fresh air compared to the popular meta decks.
While meta decks might be a safe bet for climbing the ladder seriously, they can become monotonous when everyone is playing the same strategies. On the other hand, off-meta decks bring excitement and unpredictability to your matches. Facing opponents who are less familiar with your deck can also give you an edge.
Let's jump into six off-meta decks that have been performing well on the ranked ladder:
Teemo Jax
15 cards
25 cards
The Teemo Jax deck is a discard Mecha-Yordle archetype that excels in an aggressive game plan. By creating Mecha-Yordles with cards like Squeaker and Arena Promoter, you can maintain board pressure while generating units for later stages of the game.
Jax with his Quick Attack keyword can be a nuisance for opponents, and leveling him up with Innovative Blacksmith, Combat Cook, and a unit equipped with Return-o Wrench can make him a powerful win condition, and start dealing substantial Overwhelm damage.
The list runs Lightning Rush, which acts as a versatile card that can adapt to different situations. Lightning Rush can be used to burn Nexus, kill units, or protect a unit.
Moreover, Electro Harpoon can kill a low-health unit and push burn Nexus damage, paving the way for more of your units to strike the Nexus.
Samira Seraphine
30 cards
10 cards
Samira Seraphine has seen some pre-emptive nerfs to Plaza Guardian and Legionary Charge in Patch 4.7 to keep the Eternal version in check. Although the Nerf to Plaza Guardian affects the Standard version, it's still maintaining a decent win rate on the ranked ladder.
The goal of this deck is to level up Seraphine as soon as possible and take advantage of the added value she provides with her spell double-cast ability. Unlike the Plaza Guardian swarm in Eternal, this version relies less on that as a win condition but more on it as added pressure on the board.
Seraphine casting cards twice will turbo-level up Samira, enabling multiple Rallies and eventually destroying the opponent's Nexus.
Finally, the standard version brings back Back Alley Bar, a valuable landmark in this deck, setting up powerful future turns with a Seraphine on the board.
Vayne Pantheon
26 cards
14 cards
The Vayne Pantheon deck has been putting up good numbers on the ranked ladder. It used to be one of the most popular meta decks before multiple Nerfs kicked it out of the meta.
The deck revolves around targeting an allied unit each turn to advance Pantheon's level up. Your goal is to have a leveled Pantheon as soon as possible, which in turn creates your late-game win condition.
A leveled Pantheon will gain five random keywords along with the Fated and Overwhelm keywords he already has. This sets up a threat capable of dishing out a lot of Nexus damage. To get more out of Pantheon's damage, Vayne's Tumble and Cataclysm will let you go for an additional attack with him, dealing more Nexus damage.
The deck also features Fated units like Saga Seeker and Sacrificial Scholar, which, when given the Overwhelm from Iula or Wandering Shepherd, can become powerful win conditions. Camphor, the Doubt can challenge and eliminate opposing units while pushing Overwhelm damage.
Gwen Quinn
16 cards
24 cards
We haven't seen much of Gwen Quinn since the Nerf to Opulent Foyer. The archetype remained in the shadows, still holding up well on the ranked ladder but not enough to make it into the top performers. Gwen Quinn is a unique deck that combines the strength of Demacia's multiple attacks with the Hallowed keyword from the Shadow Isles.
In the early stages of the game, Boisterous Host, Phantom Butler, and Redeemed Prodigy will stack up the Hallowed keyword, leading to stronger attacks later on.
Gwen is capable of initiating strong attacks that force your opponent to commit resources to kill her or offer a sacrifice to preserve their Nexus' health. The additional attack you're able to do with Cataclysm or Relentless Pursuit will turbo-level her up, creating a burn tool to destroy the opponent's Nexus.
Valor's Scout attack and Hallowed stacks can kill high-health units and provide safe opportunities for other units to attack. If Quinn is protected until she's leveled, she'll start creating more Valors to pull away the strongest unit and create wider attacks.
The list runs 1 copy of The Harrowing as a final win condition if your board has been wiped. The Harrowing can end up being a weaker play if there is an Opulent Foyer on the board, taking spots from your Ephemeral summoned units.
Akshan Samira
6 cards
34 cards
Akshan Samira is a fun and challenging deck that can be difficult to fully master. It has a unique game plan that forces your opponent to shut it down, or they'll end up losing in one powerful turn.
Akshan and Samira are pivotal to the deck's success. Early deployment of Akshan allows you to start progressing with Warlord's Palace. On the other hand, Samira's Flair enables her to eliminate enemy units and maintain board control. This will also advance the Warlord's Palace, accelerating access to additional value.
Regarding weapons, Swinging Glaive and The Darkin Bloodletters put considerable pressure on the opponent when equipped to your champions. Moreover, playing these weapons contributes to your champions' level-up requirements.
Once Warlord's Hoard is activated, you gain access to potent value cards. Shield of the Sentinels grants +2|+2 and Spell Shield to your champions, turning Samira and Akshan into win conditions. However, the true standout is Fount of Power. It offers additional card draw and reduces the cost of your cards by 1, setting the stage for a powerful turn when Samira is on the board. This allows you to play a lot of cards in a single turn, triggering Rally multiple times, breaking through the opponent's blockers, and connecting with their Nexus.
An alternative win condition is Xolaani from The Darkin Bloodletters. It creates an Overwhelm win condition that can be difficult for the opponent to handle.
Norra Gnar
31 cards
9 cards
The control Gnar Norra deck, while not as popular as before, remains a solid choice in the current meta. It's a control deck focused on maintaining board control with numerous removal options, ultimately exhausting your opponent's resources.
Mysterious Portal generated by Norra, Junk Construct, Portal Scholar, and Portalpalooza help you match your opponent's board development. Leveling up Norra turns her into a powerful win condition with even more potent Mysterious Portal.
As for Gnar, he can challenge and kill powerful units while also pushing Overwhelm damage. His ability to create a Pokey Stick offers a valuable ping spell and card draw.
Finally, Lord Broadmane plays a crucial role in keeping the board in check. You're able to transform your ping spells into deadly weapons, killing important units on the opponent's side of the board.
