The second champion for Legends of Runeterra's Fate's Voyage: Onward Expansion is Janna! The Storm's Fury joins the Runeterra roster with a stunning new art design.
Janna is a Piltover & Zaun champion, and she looks to set up value gameplay with her mana reduction and card draw potential. Alongside Janna, nine new Piltover & Zaun cards have been unveiled to support her strategy.
I'll go through all the new cards and give my rating and opinion on them.
Here’s my rating scale:
- 5.0: Meta-defining card, it should prove itself as a staple in multiple top-tier archetypes.
- 4.0: Archetype staple, or auto-include in multiple archetypes.
- 3.0: A solid playable could serve as a staple for some archetypes.
- 2.0: Could be used for specific synergies or to counter some decks.
- 1.0: Unlikely to find its place in the meta.
Janna
Rate: 3.5
Janna, a 4-cost champion with 2|4 stats, may seem weak in combat, but her real strength lies in her abilities. Her play effect allows you to Updraft, putting two cards back into your deck and drawing two new cards next turn. This is powerful as Updraft reduces the cost of your chosen cards by 1, and with Janna on the board, they become even cheaper. This sets the stage for turns where you can play many cards and outvalue your opponent.
Janna's champion spell is basically a card draw for 4 mana with an additional Power boost of 2 damage. Eye Of The Storm will be exceptionally useful to keep resources in your hand, and you'll most likely get to play it for less than 4 mana thanks to Janna's cost-reduction ability.
Janna can be paired with Nilah since both champions will be included in decks with a lot of card-draw potential. A leveled Janna will give you access to an additional card draw per turn and will gain the Elusive keyword, allowing you to finally start attacking with her. The additional card draw will ensure you keep the outvalue game plan alive in the late game.
Another champion Janna could work with is Seraphine. Reducing the cost of spells below 3 mana will allow Seraphine to double-cast them, providing more value for the late game. Think of Janna and Updraft as a Back Alley Bar replacement.
Similar to her role in League of Legends, Janna is a support champion in Runeterra who aims to set up its paired champion for a strong late game.
Windborne Mariner
Rate: 2.0
Windborne Mariner is basically a better Academy Prodigy since it can be played for 0 mana but can be pinged down by cards like Pie Toss or Pokey Stick. It'll most likely be an inclusion in decks with a lot of card draw potential that still want to keep up with the opponent's board development.
Formula or Drum Solo are two card draw spells that will allow you to play Windborne Mariner easily even outside of the "card draw archetype".
Maryam, Temple Caretaker
Rate: 3.5
Maryam, Temple Caretaker is a powerful mana resource value, allowing you to Updraft a card for full spell mana. This opens opportunities for additional plays on one turn while still summoning a 2|3 unit on the board.
Depending on the scenario, you could also opt to choose card draw over mana. This can come in handy when looking for additional plays on a specific turn.
At the same time, using the Updraft keyword will assist you later on in leveling your Janna.
Sunken Temple
Rate: 3.5
The Sunken Temple landmark is all about late-game value. The longer this landmark is allowed on the board, the more likely you'll start drawing more reduced mana-cost cards.
This will set you up for future turns where you're able to play a lot more cards thanks to the mana reduction.
Keep in mind that you're also receiving an additional card draw from the Sunken Temple every round start. This will be crucial to keep the value in your hand and provide more options to choose from.
Howling Gale
Rate: 4.0
A solid addition to Janna decks to assist you in keeping control of the board. The fact that you're able to reduce the cost of the cards in your hand means that it'll be an easy task to stack up its damage potential.
A 3-cost spell that can potentially deal 5 damage will be difficult for the opponent to deal with and will act as a removal card for their key units.
Even outside of Janna decks, Howling Gale might find use in an archetype with low-cost cards that are capable of getting that damage boost.
Divine Whirlwind
Rate: 2.5
Divine Whirlwind works best in archetypes capable of drawing a lot in one turn. You want to get the 2-mana cost discount before playing the damage spell.
3 unit damage and 2 Nexus damage spell is good enough to remove pesky units while also burning the opponent's Nexus.
Without the mana reduction, playing this card for 5 mana will feel too expensive for the damage it pushes. You'll mainly be using this card to kill units rather than deal Nexus damage, unless you're trying to destroy a low-health Nexus.
Iascylla, Figurehead of The Deep
Rate: 2.0
Iascylla, Figurehead of the Deep is an Elemental Spell or Skill synergy that lets you copy them on the same target.
It's a 6-cost unit with a 4|4 stat line that wants to stay in the back and create additional value. Even if the opponent tries to kill it, you'll still be able to get some value out of it if you've banked some mana.
Iascylla, Figurehead of the Deep is limited to archetypes with a lot of Elemental Spells and Skills that are capable of taking advantage of its powerful effect.
Exalted Cloudwinder
Rate: 2.5
A 5-cost unit with a 3|2 stat line. Obviously, this isn't worth summoning on the board unless you've reduced its cost by drawing three cards. Exalted Cloudwinder also has the Quick Attack keyword, making it difficult for the opponent to block and kill it, especially if you have any Power buff cards.
The card-draw ability is what makes Exalted Cloudwinder a strong value card. You won't draw the two cards until the upcoming turn, but you can set them up for the upcoming turn and even activate the effects of certain units or spells that require card draw.
This could find use in decks outside of the card draw archetypes, that might need access to the additional card draw Exalted Cloudwinder provides.
Galesong Call
Rate: 2.0
Galesong Call can find use in decks that revolve around casting spells like Seraphine. You'll be able to work on leveling Seraphine while also creating a 2|1 unit on the board to keep up with the opponent.
Galesong Call is also an Elemental spell that could be included in archetypes that take advantage of Elemental spells.
Galesong Flock
Rate: 2.0
More Elemental Spell and Skill support cards. This can create a high-stat unit on the board, capable of forcing the opponent to block it.
The card draw is also an important resource value it provides, especially if you manage to double cast it with Iascylla, Figurehead of the Deep.
You could also Manifist for 0 mana with the new card Wizened Helmsman, creating a threat on the board and card draw.
Closing Words
Janna looks like a fun support champion who shines in decks capable of prolonging games until you reduce the cost of your cards and set up powerful plays. She'll need to pair with a carry champion who can take advantage of that value and set up the win condition. It'll be interesting to see what players will cook with Janna and the new support cards.
